Key Feature Articles

01
Middle East Conflict & Feed Supply Chains
Pages 05 – 06
Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are creating significant uncertainty across global feed commodity markets. Higher energy prices are driving up costs of transportation, processing, and feed manufacturing — directly impacting feed producers and livestock integrators across the MENASA region. Feed represents 60–70% of total production costs for poultry and aquaculture, making supply chain disruptions particularly damaging. Increased freight rates and shipping uncertainties are creating additional pressure on countries that rely heavily on imported protein meals, grains, and feed additives. Despite current volatility, population growth, urbanisation, and rising demand for animal protein are expected to keep feed demand stable, with producers encouraged to adopt more efficient feed formulations and alternative ingredients.
02
Rice Protein Meal — An Alternative Protein Source
Pages 07 – 10
Rice protein meal, a by-product of the rice starch industry, has emerged as a sustainable plant-based protein reshaping both human nutrition and animal feed markets. With approximately 68% of the global population being lactose intolerant, the shift toward plant protein alternatives is accelerating. The global rice protein market is estimated at USD 0.88 billion in 2025, projected to reach USD 1.11 billion by 2030 at a CAGR of 4.74%. During processing, rice is fractionated into approximately 75% starch and 25% protein-rich meal. Research on standardized ileal digestibility (SID) reveals that arginine (73.1%) and lysine (60.4%) show the highest digestibility, while cysteine (27.9%) and methionine (44.2%) exhibit the lowest — a critical consideration for poultry nutritionists formulating with rice protein meal. Top rice-producing nations driving supply include China (~208–217 million tonnes), India (~190–196 million tonnes), Bangladesh (~57 million tonnes), and Indonesia (~53–54 million tonnes).
03
GCC Feed Ingredients Market Intelligence 2025
Pages 12 – 14
The GCC feed ingredient market continues to expand, driven by rising demand for poultry meat, eggs, dairy, and aquaculture products. The region sources approximately 80–95% of its feed raw materials from international markets including Brazil, the United States, Argentina, and the European Union. Core ingredients include corn, soybean meal, barley, wheat bran, DDGS, fishmeal, and a wide range of additives such as enzymes, amino acids, vitamins, and mycotoxin binders. Saudi Arabia, the region's largest market, records poultry production of approximately 1.5–1.6 million tons annually with a feed demand of 7–8 million tons per year. The UAE's annual feed demand stands at 1.8–2.0 million tons, Oman at 600–700 thousand tons, Qatar at 450–500 thousand tons, and Kuwait at 350–400 thousand tons. Despite global supply chain challenges, the regional outlook remains positive, driven by population growth and government food security initiatives under Vision 2030 and related national strategies.
04
Global Leader Talk — India's Poultry Feed Quality
Pages 16 – 17
India's poultry industry, valued at USD 30 billion, employs over 6 million people directly or indirectly and is growing at 8% annually. The country ranks as the second largest egg producer globally with 149 billion eggs annually, and the fifth largest poultry meat producer with approximately 10 million metric tons per year. Per capita consumption stands at 106 eggs and 7.4 kg of chicken per person per year. By 2047, with a projected population of 1.53 billion, India will require approximately 38 million tonnes of broiler feed and 34 million tonnes of layer feed annually. Total broiler placement currently stands at approximately 5.5 billion per year. Key challenges facing the sector include feed ingredient adulteration, a shortage of NABL-accredited feed testing laboratories, and the need for policy support to allow imports of GM soybean, soybean meal, and maize — all critical as India strives to meet rising domestic demand for quality poultry products while maintaining sustainable feed supply chains.
05
On Farm Hatching — NestBorn Technology
Pages 24 – 25
On-farm hatching technology, led by NestBorn Sweden, is reshaping broiler production by enabling chicks to hatch directly on the farm — eliminating early-life stressors including handling, transport, and delayed access to feed and water. This results in stronger, more uniform chicks with improved immunity, better gut development, and enhanced early growth performance, directly contributing to higher productivity and feed efficiency in broiler production systems. A critical but less discussed advantage is its role during disease outbreaks such as Avian Influenza or Newcastle Disease: when movement restrictions disrupt traditional hatchery operations, European legislation allows controlled derogations for transporting pre-incubated eggs into restricted zones where they can safely hatch under optimal farm conditions. Practical application across Germany, Denmark, and Sweden has demonstrated its effectiveness — including the successful placement of approximately 300,000 eggs during a restriction period, preventing production losses across multiple sheds and maintaining supply chain stability.

Navigating the Storm: GCC Poultry at the Crossroads
Page 05 · Editorial
The GCC region imports approximately 85–90% of its feed raw materials. Soybean meal prices fluctuated between $420–$510 per metric tonne in late 2024, while Red Sea rerouting added $40–$60 per container. Total GCC poultry meat consumption exceeded 4.2 million metric tonnes in 2024 while domestic production barely crossed 2.1 million tonnes. Self-sufficiency in poultry meat averages only 45–55% across the region, with the UAE and Kuwait relying on imports for over 60% of chicken consumption.
02
Alternative Routes for GCC Poultry After Collapse of US-Iran Talks
Pages 06–07 · Dr. Nasir Mukhtar
The GCC poultry meat market is projected to reach USD 7.85 billion in 2026 and USD 8.46 billion by 2031. With the Strait of Hormuz disrupted, six alternative routes are mapped: the Red Sea Corridor via Saudi ports, Oman's Salalah as a Southern Gateway, pivoting to Turkey and East Africa, rerouting Brazilian exports via the Cape of Good Hope, boosting EU supply, and emergency airfreight for critical breeding stock. BRF announced a USD 160 million plant in Jeddah producing 40,000 tonnes of halal products annually.
03
Avian Metapneumovirus — A Changing Global Map
Pages 08–13 · Valeria Alcayaga Toro, DVM — The Ohio State University
aMPV is an RNA virus with four classical subtypes (A–D). The historically stable geographic framework is no longer sufficient — recent aMPV A and B detections in US commercial poultry with molecular links to Mexico signal a shifting distribution map. In hot climates, aMPV control requires more than vaccines and biosecurity: heat stress compromises respiratory resilience, making ventilation management and molecular surveillance essential components of any serious control program.
04
Leadership Journey of Ahmed Ali Al-Qarawi — CEO Al-Watania Poultry
Pages 17–18
Al-Watania Poultry has appointed Mr. Ahmed Ali Al-Qarawi as its new CEO. His distinguished career bridges deep industrial roots at Al-Watania (VP Manufacturing & Sales for 8+ years), senior government roles as Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, and sustainability leadership as Chief of Sustainability at the National Housing Company — all aligned with Saudi Vision 2030.

06
Mastering Modern Grain Storage — Securing the Gulf's Food Future
Pages 23–29 · Dr. Imran Hassan, Grain Silo Expert
Every 3°C rise in temperature cuts grain shelf life in half. Grain with 1% more moisture has half the shelf life. Safe storage requires 13–14% moisture and temperatures below 15°C. The integrated solution combines drying, ambient cooling via aeration (5–10°C reduction, 0.1–0.5 kWh/ton), and industrial grain chilling (15–25°C reduction, 0.8–1.5 kWh/ton). In the Gulf's extreme heat, smart silo management is a strategic investment in feed security and long-term profitability.

GCC Poultry Market
After the US-Iran Conflict
Resilience, Risks, and the Road Ahead

The recent U.S.–Iran conflict once again highlighted the vulnerability of global food supply chains, particularly in the GCC, where poultry production depends heavily on imported feed grains, breeding stock, vaccines, and logistics. While the conflict created short-term disruptions, the poultry sectors across the region demonstrated remarkable resilience.

Key Findings

01
Why the GCC Poultry Industry Was at Risk
Nearly all GCC countries rely on imported agricultural commodities — corn (maize), soybean meal, wheat, feed additives, vaccines, veterinary products, parent stock, and hatching eggs. Around 89% of grain imports traditionally enter Gulf ports connected to or dependent on the Strait of Hormuz, making regional food systems particularly sensitive to geopolitical disruptions.
02
Grain Supply: Disrupted but Not Interrupted
Although shipping through the Strait of Hormuz slowed significantly during the conflict, grain imports continued via alternative routes and ports. Major exporters including Brazil, Argentina, the United States, Australia, and Ukraine continued supplying the GCC with longer transit times and higher freight costs. Saudi Arabia and Oman were less affected because of alternative logistics and port infrastructure outside the Strait of Hormuz.
03
Feed Prices During the Conflict
The conflict caused temporary increases in feed ingredient prices. Wheat and corn each rose 2–3%, while imported soybean meal saw a moderate increase. Ocean freight and marine insurance both experienced significant increases. Although grain prices rose only modestly, freight and insurance costs had a greater impact on the delivered cost of feed.
04
Chicken Meat & Egg Availability
The GCC poultry market remained well supplied: Saudi Arabia had substantially expanded domestic broiler production; the UAE maintained diversified import sources and strategic food reserves; Brazil continued supplying poultry despite logistical challenges. The table egg sector was even more resilient — local egg production in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Oman continued without major interruptions.
05
Poultry Prices During the Conflict
During the conflict, imported chicken prices increased because of higher freight costs, while locally produced chicken remained relatively stable. Egg prices showed only minor short-term fluctuations. Feed cost increases put pressure on producer margins rather than causing major retail price spikes. Regional governments monitored food markets closely to discourage panic buying.
06
Lessons & Strategic Priorities
The conflict reinforced several priorities: expand domestic feed production where feasible; diversify grain sourcing; increase strategic grain reserves; strengthen local hatchery and breeder capacity; invest in precision nutrition and feed efficiency; accelerate digital supply chain management; and enhance regional cooperation on food security. Future competitiveness will depend on reducing dependence on imported feed ingredients and improving logistics resilience.
GCC Country Outlook

Regional Performance

Highest Self-Sufficiency
Saudi Arabia
Highest level of poultry self-sufficiency in the GCC. Large integrated producers helped stabilize supply. Grains imports continued despite higher logistics costs.
Diversified Supply
United Arab Emirates
Continued to rely on imports but diversified supply routes. Domestic production helped moderate market volatility. Redirected part of imports through Fujairah and other facilities.
Alternative Ports
Oman
Benefited from ports outside the Strait of Hormuz. Experienced fewer logistical disruptions than some neighboring countries.
Higher Import Exposure
Kuwait, Bahrain & Qatar
More dependent on imported food and logistics through regional trade hubs. Greater exposure to shipping disruptions, though major shortages were avoided.
